I was kind of surprised that my last post was <i>only </i>three months ago. It seems like it's been longer.<br />
<br />
I <i>have </i>been crafting, as usual. I've had birthdays and Halloween and Christmas prep. Also, I've been doing <a href="http://nanowrimo.org/participants/nairne/">NaNoWriMo </a>- again. And I started a <a href="http://stacyswritingrules.wordpress.com/">new blog about writing</a>, though I've been slacking a little there, too.<br />
<br />
Alas, this is always my busiest time of the year. The time of year when I do <i>too </i>much. And then add a little more on top.<br />
<br />
Over the next few weeks, I'm going to try to post some of the projects I've been doing over the last few months (and maybe even the year - who knows).<br />
<br />
Today, I'm sharing this cute little dress I made for my niece, who is one and adorable (adorableness kind of goes without saying, but I'm saying it).<br />
<br />
So, last Christmas, I promised my sister I'd make her little girl a dress...and then I forgot. And because she knows how busy I can get, she didn't say anything. But then I remembered a couple months ago (pre-Halloween), felt terrible and put it on my "To Do" list.<br />
<br />
On Sunday, I finally got around to it.<br />
<br />
I used <a href="http://mccallpattern.mccall.com/m5791-products-9384.php?page_id=489">McCall's Pattern # M5791</a>, which I've used once <a href="http://dualperspicacity.blogspot.com/2010/12/little-dresses.html">before</a>...<i>years </i>ago! It was the first dress I'd <i>ever</i> made. I liked it - but I think this dress turned out much better.<br />
<br />
I constructed the little pinstriped section down the front myself.... (fabric and flower buttons from JoAnn's).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE9p0XlRaQY7KN06PZ8M5yIMW7V4h_w_iAKastptaYQeMjqxdkgCxKa2asjOwEs_uHK19fol9Eq984oLccM0LtivCYLoEk6CcKimc5ClKYWqVPB7zbVda6wFinrBX8rcheKiqC19ko-3ge/s1600/_DSC0039.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE9p0XlRaQY7KN06PZ8M5yIMW7V4h_w_iAKastptaYQeMjqxdkgCxKa2asjOwEs_uHK19fol9Eq984oLccM0LtivCYLoEk6CcKimc5ClKYWqVPB7zbVda6wFinrBX8rcheKiqC19ko-3ge/s640/_DSC0039.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
And then made the skirt longer with the plaid panel at the bottom.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHvY2mfBKiARm9HXu5z7Rf90HIdTJIYrN0fJIez8NQH9yfXCk9rHQgd0b5cDcb7LzcFpcgcjc_ToxlwB-DntGTPYkYidzL-kkdgYizBQJKNeWkuONgajXofN_BbikO-_0XSfvip77kMC6f/s1600/_DSC0043.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHvY2mfBKiARm9HXu5z7Rf90HIdTJIYrN0fJIez8NQH9yfXCk9rHQgd0b5cDcb7LzcFpcgcjc_ToxlwB-DntGTPYkYidzL-kkdgYizBQJKNeWkuONgajXofN_BbikO-_0XSfvip77kMC6f/s640/_DSC0043.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
I also only looked at the instructions once or twice to make sure I had the seam allowances right. Proof that I kind of know what I'm doing now. Huzzah for me!<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguNoGPMZRCUjDdS83_lCRXenRwPnnc-qYrgPMzzsukFZE3C87LMgyOn71aq2YZNuLW2I6aJVRE5MfnlrsjDINnuFx6jvz4tcj_T-ArJmd0oTc6quEeX51kq-w60k-W2vo0jXOjpnZTNSej/s1600/_DSC0675ect.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="332" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguNoGPMZRCUjDdS83_lCRXenRwPnnc-qYrgPMzzsukFZE3C87LMgyOn71aq2YZNuLW2I6aJVRE5MfnlrsjDINnuFx6jvz4tcj_T-ArJmd0oTc6quEeX51kq-w60k-W2vo0jXOjpnZTNSej/s640/_DSC0675ect.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I was asked to make these Truffula Trees as decorations for our ward's girl's camp - as their theme was "Oh, the Places You'll Go" from Dr. Seuss.<br />
<br />
There were a couple of challenges here: I needed to make them as cheaply as possible <i>and </i>they were supposed to be outside, so I figured they needed to be semi-weather proof.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSnsBv9yCy2LTbhucyPCPoep-FzzZdgPiWWQGeFBDr1uOGwqT1F6Ny-l66yJfJthjYzY_5R6cf7XRO2MP2FqsTpzu_8a4IiJ6C1e53oeH32lscdAQbPtpx0KzXiUHn4F34YbkYOr0sq6VO/s1600/_DSC0609et.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSnsBv9yCy2LTbhucyPCPoep-FzzZdgPiWWQGeFBDr1uOGwqT1F6Ny-l66yJfJthjYzY_5R6cf7XRO2MP2FqsTpzu_8a4IiJ6C1e53oeH32lscdAQbPtpx0KzXiUHn4F34YbkYOr0sq6VO/s640/_DSC0609et.JPG" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
These two requirements ruled out some of the options for the top part of the tree that I had found online (feathers and tissue paper, for example).<br />
<br />
I suppose the idea I ended up with came from piñatas. I wanted to have something with movement but couldn't figure out how to do it! And then I thought about piñatas and how the tissue paper is cut for the store bought ones. It makes them fluffy. It makes movement. How would I do that? How could I make something like that without using tissue paper?<br />
<br />
Figuring it out was a true "Aha!" moment, and here's how I did it:<br />
<br />
<b>For the Paper Mache Tree Top:</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
~ Flour<br />
~ Water<br />
~ Lots of Newspaper<br />
~ 17 Inch Balloon<br />
<br />
Who gets the newspaper anymore, right? I certainly don't! I got mine (and I needed A LOT, because I made 10 of these things) from friends in my ward and a trip to the recycle bin by the mailboxes for some good 'ol fashioned recycle bin divin'. The community papers that everyone gets (and no one reads) were perfect! And abundant! Though the weekly ads also sufficed. Stay away from ads where the paper is super shiny. That paper won't work! Plain newspaper works best.<br />
<br />
I had to special order the 17 inch balloons. I needed something more rounded (and bigger) than the standard 12 inch balloons they sell at the store. I got the special outdoor display balloons (<a href="http://www.bargainballoons.com/10browse.asp?Category=17%22+Outdoor+Latex&Page=1&Display=High">BargainBalloons.com</a>) and they worked great! Though now I have 62 of them left. (I will never need to purchase big balloons ever, ever again.)<br />
<br />
<b>Paper Mache Glue Recipe:</b><br />
<br />
~ One part Flour<br />
~ Two Parts Water<br />
<br />
My container was kind of small so for me this meant 1 Cup water and 1/2 Cup flour. A wire whisk works great to get all the lumps out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHlyeOlyV2vZgAfOf3YlV7uAm9TU8Q08r5Vy8Hmx2cNABa5I0Fq79VI1fH0nXMV7jOmxEs7fDzVkn9trgUZV3X-8j6yoIqA0sZqHOBbBmaNHELhw6K5CcM20dEPooj9bp6hsZL2BMeislk/s1600/_DSC0580e.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="336" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHlyeOlyV2vZgAfOf3YlV7uAm9TU8Q08r5Vy8Hmx2cNABa5I0Fq79VI1fH0nXMV7jOmxEs7fDzVkn9trgUZV3X-8j6yoIqA0sZqHOBbBmaNHELhw6K5CcM20dEPooj9bp6hsZL2BMeislk/s400/_DSC0580e.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Dip, remove excess glue by sliding the paper between two parallel fingers and apply to your balloon. It's super easy! And, surprisingly fun (though by the eighth one I was watching Doctor Who through Netflix on my iPhone to combat the monotony while I was working).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTwaA45xnDD9IoLe7dtNiDHOy5hlRAkfFFfOLGdd1djxnzKVNj_bay0vQ1Bu-wHW38xBiOnUn5TUM8GMyeEijNy7kqwLE3rF3RIgUc70891eWqrgKpMDs-lCJWjPEcg3cQEdyeyL-hynPw/s1600/PaperMacheProcessCollage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTwaA45xnDD9IoLe7dtNiDHOy5hlRAkfFFfOLGdd1djxnzKVNj_bay0vQ1Bu-wHW38xBiOnUn5TUM8GMyeEijNy7kqwLE3rF3RIgUc70891eWqrgKpMDs-lCJWjPEcg3cQEdyeyL-hynPw/s640/PaperMacheProcessCollage.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>Paper Mache Tips:</b><br />
<br />
~ Try to find a work space that stays at roughly the same temperature all the time. The air inside the balloon expands and contracts according to the room's temperature. It can crack your paper mache if the balloon expands or cause it to wrinkle if the balloon contracts.<br />
~ Longer strips worked the best (8-10 inches)<br />
~ You'll need to do 4 to 5 layers.<br />
~ Alternate your strips between vertical and horizontal with each layer. It helps you keep track of what layer you're on.<br />
<br />
Once you've completed your last layer and allowed your paper mache to dry thoroughly, deflate the balloon and pull it out through the hole. I cut the hole a <i>little </i>bit bigger with some scissors (only about a 1/4" or so).<br />
<br />
<b>Note:</b> I had a couple of tree tops crumple when I deflated the balloons. There's no need to panic if that happens to you! Just gently pop the globe back out to the right shape (I used the PVC pipes I had on hand to do it since the hole was so small) and add another layer or two of paper mache on the weak spots to strengthen the structure of the globe.<br />
<br />

<br />
<b>For the Tree Fluff:</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
~ Plastic Tablecloth<br />
~ Scissors<br />
~ Hot Glue Gun & Lots of Glue<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinC85yxmf4K1Gb-XDl844n7xEuVZeYt_11UW5LUtwmGecMKE2mYy4IZHZh7c_p-fH3rbtoziPZFl1o4ru4MFO85G9f0rZcDX6wP7vecd7DpZAFhtvDadPRxLmN5kgsXwOdjzt482jAKo__/s1600/TableclothCollage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinC85yxmf4K1Gb-XDl844n7xEuVZeYt_11UW5LUtwmGecMKE2mYy4IZHZh7c_p-fH3rbtoziPZFl1o4ru4MFO85G9f0rZcDX6wP7vecd7DpZAFhtvDadPRxLmN5kgsXwOdjzt482jAKo__/s640/TableclothCollage.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I got my plastic table cloths at Party City (they were 3 for $5 - score!). One table cloth will make two Truffula Trees (add that to your bank of useless knowledge).<br />
<br />
Lay it out lengthwise on the floor, still folded the way it was in the package. You should have four 'layers' of plastic. You'll need to cut the folds on both sides by sliding your scissors between the layers (one side you'll cut through just one layer of plastic, the other side will be two) so that you have four separate layers when you're done.<br />
<br />
Then cut the layers into strips about 2 to 2 1/2 inches in width. I was able to get five strips from each table cloth.<br />
<br />
Fold your strips in half lengthwise, twice. Cut little strips along one side of the folded strip to a little beyond the midpoint of the strip. Continue cutting strips until you've reached the end.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZeEAffkMK6K0jTXRO1gJfSxh2VA0ia1fwLpzb4mWF-e4iD-Vzy-nS13X1XGdW7ONyKK0atKz6cWByQ1avnG0oIi2y1-3yAR3zlrP0PUR80qt96C5r53mITZRvuufbdMjsqKa1tImIvC6x/s1600/_DSC0546et.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZeEAffkMK6K0jTXRO1gJfSxh2VA0ia1fwLpzb4mWF-e4iD-Vzy-nS13X1XGdW7ONyKK0atKz6cWByQ1avnG0oIi2y1-3yAR3zlrP0PUR80qt96C5r53mITZRvuufbdMjsqKa1tImIvC6x/s640/_DSC0546et.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
The next step is to glue the frills to the paper mache globe.<br />
<br />
The <b>number one</b> thing to remember here is that you want the plastic to <b>lay flat</b>!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4PYEXmtDEg4kxAg6rtuMJ6xYY_6bBXzRfWApHyVIgnk-AHOXP06-Yk1OerP-AiY9pDqngj-hbtxiXgNaqjgLz7LzLfQ5R5CkluUoeMQW26dFM2km1FUJPdC4WeLFWH-R5MQJ9svtJSKTB/s1600/Truffula+Trees1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4PYEXmtDEg4kxAg6rtuMJ6xYY_6bBXzRfWApHyVIgnk-AHOXP06-Yk1OerP-AiY9pDqngj-hbtxiXgNaqjgLz7LzLfQ5R5CkluUoeMQW26dFM2km1FUJPdC4WeLFWH-R5MQJ9svtJSKTB/s640/Truffula+Trees1.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
You'll need your trusty scissors again to cut slits in the plastic on the uncut side of the frill so you can make your straight frills fit your round object. I found that near the center, there is less need for this.<br />
<br />
Just know that if you have puckers, that's when you know you need to cut a slit.<br />
<br />
<b></b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0px; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBgqbCGVvf5N71IMc4uA-QIVZl6Uc603dX0XgkKzeSWi5Ei2WBVia6k9Qm3h99JbvxXtTUH4bjYbOhYD9YZ1coTQ4UYwkMQnUz9Gy_fYrnQntPWg3tYNh9eZtkkCgB5GWxqK8BepraK9hw/s1600/_DSC0711et.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBgqbCGVvf5N71IMc4uA-QIVZl6Uc603dX0XgkKzeSWi5Ei2WBVia6k9Qm3h99JbvxXtTUH4bjYbOhYD9YZ1coTQ4UYwkMQnUz9Gy_fYrnQntPWg3tYNh9eZtkkCgB5GWxqK8BepraK9hw/s640/_DSC0711et.JPG" width="424" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<b>For the Trunk</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
~ 3/4" x approx 5' PVC Pipe<br />
~ White, Yellow & Black Acrylic paint<br />
~ Electrical tape<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs-aUtVxHh0MBTmphiR4JCffIKVd2CSNCHgfD-MRhuq5N9_6_dkrqFjL96QAk7HBvgMCUKcnIfIyfddfsh_WARyGFHg57faQa9c2NJqdPLQ2TPUefPaQQl4BnxpxqC_BopS7H3Lo6mJZEa/s1600/_DSC0934et.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgs-aUtVxHh0MBTmphiR4JCffIKVd2CSNCHgfD-MRhuq5N9_6_dkrqFjL96QAk7HBvgMCUKcnIfIyfddfsh_WARyGFHg57faQa9c2NJqdPLQ2TPUefPaQQl4BnxpxqC_BopS7H3Lo6mJZEa/s640/_DSC0934et.JPG" width="424" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I tried spray painting these (didn't work!). Acrylic paint worked great though. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I marked off the portions of the pipe I wouldn't need to paint - the bottom, which would be driven into the ground and the top, which would be inside the balloon. Then I did a layer or two of white paint over the writing on the pipes before painting the yellow. I still needed several layers to cover everything. Then I used black paint for the finishing touches.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Drive the short unpainted end of the PVC pipe into the ground and put the globe on top and you're done!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I'm so excited to be participating in <a href="http://www.campnanowrimo.org/campers/nairne">Camp NaNoWriMo</a> this month. I really need me some good 'ol fashioned kick-you-in-the-pants motivation.Stacyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11532004243021813605noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7950264434413505620.post-58675353419947018062013-03-26T14:57:00.004-04:002013-03-26T14:57:48.592-04:00Easy Salted Caramel Brownie Bites<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
~ 1 box of your favorite Brownie Mix</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
~ Coarse Sea Salt</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
~ Mini-muffin pan liners (I got my foil ones at Walmart on <i>super</i>-after-Christmas-clearance)</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
~ Approx. 1/2 pound of Caramels (try your local bulk foods retailer)</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
~ Approx. 1/4 cup Heavy Whipping Cream</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Mix up your brownie mix according to the packaging's directions and fill each mini-muffin cup to about three quarters full. Bake in 325 degree oven for approximately 19 minutes (or until a clean toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean). Let cool.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Meanwhile, unwrap your caramels and put them in a stainless steel saucepan with the 1/4 cup of whipping cream. Turn on heat to<b> low </b>and occasionally stir the caramels until they've melted. Remove from heat.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
'Frost' your mini-brownies with the caramel and add a pinch of sea salt to each one, gently pressing the salt into the soft caramel (otherwise the salt may just fall off).</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And that's it! Easy and delicious!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Enjoy!</div>

<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't plan as well this time, so instead of getting done a month early, I was literally hot gluing flowers to Madeline's wig the DAY OF Halloween. I'd only finished Madeline's dress the day before. My stress level was pretty high. In my defense, I was a little distracted with my infant son, but this year I'm determined to start and finish early again!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8cSibk8pX4cTEI631oOcen6MI_N50U_Qc0geDxijubWHOLM0WVIetWCLaLLbJk-zNXJnrK5oUhzDghaFnKEOIVEr349xep8wp7yN2lgBtQPgRj29RHI3jExUNlty851en6UijSSYG6TXb/s1600/_DSC0744e.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8cSibk8pX4cTEI631oOcen6MI_N50U_Qc0geDxijubWHOLM0WVIetWCLaLLbJk-zNXJnrK5oUhzDghaFnKEOIVEr349xep8wp7yN2lgBtQPgRj29RHI3jExUNlty851en6UijSSYG6TXb/s640/_DSC0744e.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used McCall's pattern number <a href="http://mccallpattern.mccall.com/m4887-products-7366.php?page_id=494">M4887</a> for the fairy dress and made my own pattern for the wings, using the method outlined in the pattern (I thought the wing pattern included was too round!). I also made some bloomers that go to the knee to wear underneath the dress, which you can sort of see in the second picture from the top - those weren't part of the pattern either. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For Rapunzel, I used Simplicity pattern number <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-6383-childs-costumes.aspx">2065</a>. I didn't bother making the yarn wig. I just bought a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003IC7IZC/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1">long blond wig</a> from Amazon (and glued flowers into it, as I mentioned earlier). </div>

This was my very first commissioned cake. I made it for my friend <a href="http://www.blogger.com/profile/16464471763515609922">Becky</a>'s adorable little girl.<br />
<br />
I was worried about the added pressure of making a cake for someone else (hello, perfectionist Stacy in overdrive) but it was no. big. deal.<br />
<br />
I hope she likes it!<br />

<br />
We usually don't do anything for Valentine's day, but this year we were invited to a Valentine's Day party (!), so I decided to step outside my comfort zone and make some Valentines!<br />
<br />
Madeline and I combed over my <a href="http://pinterest.com/stacycrapo/valentine-s-day/">Valentine's day Pinterest board</a> and she wanted glowsticks! (What kid doesn't, right?)<br />
<br />
There were a couple of examples of the ones with a 'heart' - I decided to make my own in Inkscape (you can have a generic one for <i>free </i><a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Byzyh61V-XeoZHRZNDVEWGZqM2M/edit?usp=sharing">HERE</a>). Some scissors, two hole punches and a glowstick later - <span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px;">voilà</span>, homemade valentines!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

For Evie's, I came up with something of my very own! Since I usually don't have good paper-craft ideas, I was very excited about this.</div>

All you need is a balloon and a piece of ribbon. One hole punch at the bottom and pull the opening of the balloon through the hole and tie the ribbon around it.</div>

You're probably wondering, "Why Green?!? It's Valentine's Day!" Well, I just happen to have green and white balloons for a little someone's upcoming birthday party and I'm too lazy to go get different ones....<br />
<br />
Besides, green's awesome, if you didn't already know.<br />

<br />
We got it before my first child was born over five years ago.<br />
<br />
It's been banged up. The drawers weren't working properly. It was an ugly color. Need I say more?<br />
<br />
I found <a href="http://www.centsationalgirl.com/2011/04/how-to-paint-furniture/">this tutorial</a> on Pinterest about repainting furniture and used it as a guide.<br />
<br />
But there were other problems with this dresser that had to be addressed first.<br />
<br />
The first thing I did was replace all the drawer sliders for the three big drawers (Lowes).<br />
<br />
Then I had to sand everything. The primer I got said you didn't <i>have </i>to sand it, but I did anyway, just to be sure the paint would stick. And since we were using the darn thing at the same time I was doing the refinish, I had to reassemble the dresser as I finished each piece. Needless to say, I'm an expert at taking this thing apart and reassembling....<br />
<br />
The next step was the primer - <a href="http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=217">Zinsser 1-2-3 Water-Base Primer</a> is what I used.<br />
<br />
Then the paint - <a href="http://www.behr.com/Behr/home#view=14;vgnextoid=6bd8ea6621ca5110VgnVCM1000008119fea9RCRD;channel=EXPLORE">Baer</a> - Gem Turquoise 500B-4. I wanted blue but not BOY blue. PS - I <i>love </i>this color.<br />
<br />
Then the finish - <a href="http://www.minwax.com/wood-products/interior-clear-protective-finishes/minwax-polycrylic-protective-finish">Minwax Polycrylic</a>.<br />
<br />
And finally (finally!) I was done (with a month left in my pregnancy to spare).<br />
<br />
We've been enjoying this lovely refurbished changing table for over seven months now! (has it really been that long? Wow.)<br />

If you're looking for delicious holiday treat that <i>only </i>uses a pound of butter, then I have the perfect thing for you!<br />
<br />
When the Husband first requested this a couple of years ago for a Christmastime treat, I asked my Mother-in-law what recipe <i>she </i>uses (this was a childhood favorite of my husband). She sent me a link to a recipe by Michael Symon - except(!), she uses a different recipe for the syrup - both of which are found below. I've made this with both walnuts and pistachios - pistachios are my favorite!<br />
<br />
Enjoy!<br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #3d3d3d; font-family: inherit;"><b><br /></b></span>
Position a rack in the lower third of the oven; preheat to 350 degrees F. Combine the nuts, cinnamon and ground crackers in a bowl.<br />
<br />
Brush a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with some of the butter. Layer 14 pieces of phyllo in the dish, brushing each piece with butter before adding the next (keep the remaining dough covered with a damp towel). Sprinkle a quarter of the nut mixture over the dough (about 1 Cup). Layer 5 pieces of phyllo on top, brushing each with butter before adding the next; sprinkle with another quarter of the nut mixture. Add 5 more phyllo pieces on top, brushing each with butter, then add another quarter of the nut mixture, 5 more pieces of phyllo with butter, and the remaining nuts.<br />
<br />
Layer the remaining 11 pieces of phyllo on top of the nuts, brushing each with butter; brush the top piece with extra butter. Cut into the baklava to make strips, about 1 1/2 inches wide. Then make diagonal slices, about 1 1/2 inches apart, to create a diamond pattern. Bake until golden, about 1 hour.<br />
<br />
Bring the sugar, honey and water to a boil and cook, 10 to 15 minutes. Add the lemon juice, vanilla and salt and boil 2 more minutes, then let cool slightly.<br />
<br />
Pour the syrup over the warm baklava; let soak, uncovered, at least 6 hours or overnight. Garnish with nuts.Stacyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11532004243021813605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7950264434413505620.post-64881141717024571032013-01-10T15:07:00.000-05:002013-01-11T10:46:29.416-05:00Wheelchair Bag Tutorial<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
We made these wheelchair bags to take with us for our Activity Days trip to the Pocopson home in December.<br />
<br />
Here's a quick tutorial!<br />
<br />
<b>What you'll need:</b><br />
<br />
~ A sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper (This will be your template)<br />
~ Approx. 1/3 yd of Main fabric<br />
~ Approx. 1/3 yd of Lining fabric<br />
~ Thread<br />
~ Sewing machine<br />
~ Scissors<br />
<br />
Step 1: Using the sheet of paper as a template, cut out two rectangles from your main fabric and two rectangles from the lining fabric.<br />
<i><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></i>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: x-small;">(This fabric reminds me of the 90's......)</span></i></div>
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
Step 2: From the remaining fabric (main or lining) cut four strips 2 inches wide x 12 inches long.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b>The Blessing Dress or How I Spent My Christmas Vacation</b><br />
<br />
I know what you're thinking people: Stacy must be sitting on her hands doing nothing, nothing! Or dead. Whichever.<br />
<br />
Not so!<br />
<br />
I'm totally a lazy blogger though.<br />
<br />
Taking pictures.<br />
<i><br /></i>
<i>So </i>much work.<br />
<br />
Editing pictures.<br />
<br />
So much<i> more </i>work.<br />
<br />
<i>Writing</i>.....well, I <i>have </i>been doing <a href="http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/participants/nairne">that</a>, but more on that later.<br />
<br />
Until then, you can read about this lovely blessing dress I made last month...which was clearly not for me. I have a boy, people - who is six months old (can you believe that? No? Me either.).<br />
<br />
Why did I agree to this? Well, the story is that back in May, my ward had a cake and service auction to raise money for the youth's summer programs. I made a cake (natch) and offered my services as a seamstress for a little girl. A friend of mine won my services but held off on taking me up on it, knowing that I had just had a baby and not wanting to take up too much of my time. It was always on my mind though and I felt like I just <i>needed </i>to fulfill that obligation ASAP.<br />
<br />
I got a call from my friend in November. She said she had the perfect opportunity for me to perform my service - her sister was in need of blessing dress - the blessing was on December 30th.<br />
<br />
I was going to spend December in my hometown in Oregon, where I wouldn't have much to do otherwise so I agreed.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
My friend's sister directed me to <a href="http://rambunctiouskids.blogspot.com/2012/06/blessing-dress.html">this</a> blog post about a blessing dress she thought was just what she was looking for - the skirt part anyway. <i>That </i>post referenced <a href="http://www.lilblueboo.com/2011/09/cascading-ruffle-skirt-a-tutorial-and-free-download.html">this</a> tutorial. The original post never says how the skirt was actually made, so I had to figure it out on my own. It turned out to be a bit more challenging than I had originally thought...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I drafted my own pattern for the bodice (which she wanted to be simple) using the measurements that I'd been given. This baby was premature so she was smaller than any of the patterns I had access to. I drafted my own pattern for the little sleeves as well (I use <a href="http://www.angelfire.com/empire/radhika/Cool/Patterns.htm#CS">this</a> tutorial), wanting to keep them light and airy, so I used the same chiffon I used for the ruffles. They were planning to have the baby wear a little sweater over the top of the dress and I wanted to cut down on fabric bulk (I used Taffeta for the bodice and skirt).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: x-small;">(Buttons, my arch nemesis.)</span></i></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGHRqhfFMIyko75pLOBNu6RYaGARmtxuKi5oGif920K0iC7aBjJoYhwBmAo_r5ZITv_GcdnTgMzp2YKc2mIQNhWmk64dmqMpOXMWGKK8SEJ6zaMSgPYd7XxyBg88LPU_CogL8g4RLj6ubx/s1600/_DSC1398eb&w.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGHRqhfFMIyko75pLOBNu6RYaGARmtxuKi5oGif920K0iC7aBjJoYhwBmAo_r5ZITv_GcdnTgMzp2YKc2mIQNhWmk64dmqMpOXMWGKK8SEJ6zaMSgPYd7XxyBg88LPU_CogL8g4RLj6ubx/s640/_DSC1398eb&w.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The ruffles were the most challenging aspect of the dress. There are twelve and each had to be hemmed all the way around. Easier said than done. I think the buttons are the scariest part to do, though - you mess those up and you've ruined the whole dress!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Overall, I think the project turned out well - and my friend's sister absolutely <i>loved </i>it!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
With my due date quickly approaching, I pulled our bassinet out of storage for reassembly.<br />
<br />
I've been planning for some time to make a new mattress for the thing.....The one that came with it was just so.....pathetic.<br />
<br />
With my last baby, I had added padding under the sheet but it was still woefully inadequate. I don't know <i>how </i>she slept on it. Hence my decision to make sure <i>this </i>baby wasn't sleeping on a wafer-thin abomination to mattresses everywhere.<br />
<br />
I also decided I'd do a little tutorial!<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">What you'll need to make your very own Bassinet Crib Mattress:</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> - Measuring tape</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> - Foam by the yard</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> - 3/4 yrd vinyl</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> - Sewing machine</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> - Matching thread</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Step 1: Measure your bassinet.</span><br />
My bassinet dimensions turned out to be 30 in by 15 in. You'll need this measurement to determine the amount of foam you'll need.<br />
<br />
I got my foam by the yard at Joann's during their Memorial Day sale - it was all 50% off. Since the thickness I choose (which is 1 1/2 inches, by the way) was $30.99 /yd normally, I was eager to get a deal.
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Step 2: Cut your foam to fit snugly into the bassinet.</span><br />
I initially cut the foam to 30 in x 15 in, knowing that I would need to trim it down a little to fit. I then set the foam on top of the bassinet and used a Sharpie to mark where I needed to round the corners and/or cut off a little foam. The final dimensions were 30 in x 14 1/2 in.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivkUzDnpL-FS19D_0jKqU3XuAqYpLhJJyIeZnLK1kluoTAhQN63LBhgfTGd_3Pq11yUJDuRFAIQ3BElIWu03MOq4DUnCx2d94vk8VzHic1ps3-gq5y_P5mUFnPnwYPItl-O1Wu5uZlouU5/s1600/_DSC0318E.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivkUzDnpL-FS19D_0jKqU3XuAqYpLhJJyIeZnLK1kluoTAhQN63LBhgfTGd_3Pq11yUJDuRFAIQ3BElIWu03MOq4DUnCx2d94vk8VzHic1ps3-gq5y_P5mUFnPnwYPItl-O1Wu5uZlouU5/s640/_DSC0318E.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Again, make sure the fit in the bassinet is snug. Safety first(!) when it comes to the kids!<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Step 3: Pin your vinyl around the foam.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Place your foam on a single layer of vinyl (vinyl is located in the 'utility' fabrics area of your local craft store - available in many colors). Make sure you have a buffer around the outside of the foam - 2 or 3 inches is sufficient.

Fold the vinyl over the foam, tightening the vinyl against the foam on the folded side (creating a vinyl-foam ...taco?).<br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<b style="text-align: left;">Note: </b><span style="text-align: left;">If you're wondering why I only pinned/sewed three sides here, the reason is that I am inherently lazy and cheap. The less work I have to do and the least amount of materials I have to use, the better. You could, indeed, pin/sew all the way around (you masochist, you).</span><br />
<span style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;">Step 5: Make vinyl binding.</span></span><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
You'll need to make some binding to hide your raw edges. Cut 2 inch strips from your leftover vinyl - enough to cover all your edges.
</div>
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span>
<span style="text-align: left;">If you need to sew several strips together, here's how to do it:</span><br />
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span>
<span style="text-align: left;">Place the two pieces perpendicular to each other at their ends. Sew across the two pieces at a diagonal.</span><br />
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span>

<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When you've got a strip of vinyl sufficiently long for your needs, fold it in half lengthwise. Unlike fabric, vinyl won't stay folded so you'll need to pin it to make it stay - do NOT iron! Vinyl is plastic, afterall - it will melt.</div>

Fold the raw edges in to the center fold and pin. (<span style="background-color: white;">Incidentally, this is the same method you'd use to make normal fabric binding.)</span></div>

I stumbled upon <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2011/06/reupholstering-chair-part-1-stripping.html">this tutorial</a> from <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/">Little Green Notebook</a> on <a href="http://pinterest.com/stacycrapo/">Pinterest</a> last year - thinking "Yes! I can do that! I NEED to do that!" - because we had a chair that was in desperate need of a makeover.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Behold, the sorry state of this (otherwise cute) little chair:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Before</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhJz9dje10uyf-bZRdrNrnVRe0oCEOluh1urXEXmKUGPyDp0lBv-owChJCaanAYnCeCOn3TPN-ctsZQ0Q3qUfQURI_RMYsxLdGquuY7PzUuaeqEAjFcbE4VgE3jvOa7ddB_ythW4tIyAkR/s1600/_DSC0032E.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhJz9dje10uyf-bZRdrNrnVRe0oCEOluh1urXEXmKUGPyDp0lBv-owChJCaanAYnCeCOn3TPN-ctsZQ0Q3qUfQURI_RMYsxLdGquuY7PzUuaeqEAjFcbE4VgE3jvOa7ddB_ythW4tIyAkR/s640/_DSC0032E.JPG" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
I ordered this chair from Target almost two years ago for my first born's 3rd birthday. Lets just say that the fabric failed to hold up under the pressure of being loved/abused by a rambunctious child (who likes to stand on the arms and seat, rather than sit it in like a normal person). It became discolored very quickly.....an eyesore to the Husband and myself.<br />
<br />
This project made the list of 'things we need to fix/replace during spring cleaning' so I committed to getting this done when I had some free time. My husband, bless him, even came in to <a href="http://www.joann.com/">Joann's</a> with me to help pick out some acceptable fabric.<br />
<br />
And so, last week, armed with pliers and screw driver I ripped into this thing and knocked it out in two days.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>After</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFyFMiR9ua2RYayAK3abDWqH8-YnMd30pk6oWHefywMeI6AI5eQPjk3wJNCAqjz2bILkuuM6wornl_XreJdco_36aVh-YDpomC0WBMCjg9VJu511wufvRNcx5JWdH5mEpFtzTG-r8Tq2cU/s1600/_DSC0010E.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFyFMiR9ua2RYayAK3abDWqH8-YnMd30pk6oWHefywMeI6AI5eQPjk3wJNCAqjz2bILkuuM6wornl_XreJdco_36aVh-YDpomC0WBMCjg9VJu511wufvRNcx5JWdH5mEpFtzTG-r8Tq2cU/s640/_DSC0010E.JPG" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
A closer look at my handmade welting (super easy):<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmvJUrMOCB7o0CWvZYq8XDr2akgSePN7Ao2c6g5MrZE9WfEBvJ_dHYHgzbdm-0aLgWs_-nRh45SAyHip5M0Klu9xDYEvz83-0SxwtVsj3ybj7K7Xy86iGhFeeYnynAEgfB4ramqcMnTVnU/s1600/_DSC0099E.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmvJUrMOCB7o0CWvZYq8XDr2akgSePN7Ao2c6g5MrZE9WfEBvJ_dHYHgzbdm-0aLgWs_-nRh45SAyHip5M0Klu9xDYEvz83-0SxwtVsj3ybj7K7Xy86iGhFeeYnynAEgfB4ramqcMnTVnU/s640/_DSC0099E.JPG" width="424" /></a></div>
<br />
Something extra I needed for this project (that wasn't in the tutorial I linked to above) was small nylon cord to attach the buttons to the wood frame. Also, I didn't make new buttons, I just hot-glued fabric to the old ones, but if I'd needed to make new ones, they sell cloth button 'kits' at Joann's in the notions aisle. In fact, everything I needed for this project I was able to get at Joann's.<br />

I made these for my 2-year old's mermaid birthday party. My intention was to have them be a game - a fish-bag toss, but we didn't end up using them that way. Oh well, they turned out cute anyway.</div>

In this case, my purse's lining had separated in the main pocket, creating quite the un<i>seam</i>ly hole (hehehe).<br />
<br />
So naturally I had to fix it. The edges of the fabric were very frayed, so it didn't think it wise to just sew it closed. I used a couple layers of <a href="http://www.joann.com/dritz-stitch-witchery-regular-tape-5-8-x20yd-/prd791793/">Stitch Witchery</a> and a hot iron to seal the hole closed and reinforce the seam (I covered the purse fabric with a cloth diaper before ironing, since I didn't know how the fabric would react to direct heat... the process produced an interesting smell that stayed on my hands for quite some time.)<br />
<br />
Then I slip stitched over the newly closed seam to create a more attractive finished seam. Done and done!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Do you need a spot of green for Saint Patrick's Day? A great idea (you know, if you're under 10) is a little hair bow.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I got some lovely themed ribbon from Joann's for 50% off, and a St. Patrick's Day four-leaf clover lei from Michael's (for $0.59) - which I then harvested for the clover shapes (below).</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(Consult any one of a million tutorials out on the internet for a how-to on bow making - you'll need a glue gun, hair-clips, ribbon and about 10 minutes. It's easy and fun!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The end result is this - a lovely little hair-bow for my little girl.</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For my daughter's 2nd birthday I decided to do a Mermaid/Ariel theme for her and she absolutely loved it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I got most of my ideas from <a href="http://pinterest.com/stacycrapo/mermaid-birthday-party-ideas/">Pinterest</a>. There were so many good ideas I couldn't use them all!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are the finished seaweed streamers I made. I used two different shades of green, white, and light blue. I stapled the streamer strips over a piece of string. And then I made the lovely construction paper fish to hang among-st the seaweed. It was an easy and fun project and the girls though they were super cool.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is the balloon octopus. I should have gotten a bigger bag of balloons because I ran out of red! Oh well, it was still a fun little decoration.</div>

This is the Kanzashi I made for <a href="http://www.blogger.com/profile/10276557642391880637">Tammy</a> for Christmas. The middle is a button I got from Joann's. </div>

<br />
I used the same kind of button to finish off the <a href="http://dualperspicacity.blogspot.com/2011/12/kanzashi-fun.html">red Kanzashi</a> I made and wore to my husband's Christmas party. I made it a pin to liven up my plain black dress.<br />
<br />
This blue one is a hair clip.<br />
<br />
Making these is so much fun!Stacyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11532004243021813605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7950264434413505620.post-35881689667353753342011-12-21T01:00:00.001-05:002012-03-08T14:54:19.466-05:00Holiday Hats<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix73IlfR8bYCClYxwUqm1I1u3wUbok5lcNlOPl3IGPquKKapSz7dxz8LxN4VQjR9-B7tGgZR_ffFkD0u4GaWoY_xQwLl6BnHNFmW9pX9jOIw6csgHclnpI8Q88emrR6YwIDMHi3Ex0ikg/s400/ChristmasHats03.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix73IlfR8bYCClYxwUqm1I1u3wUbok5lcNlOPl3IGPquKKapSz7dxz8LxN4VQjR9-B7tGgZR_ffFkD0u4GaWoY_xQwLl6BnHNFmW9pX9jOIw6csgHclnpI8Q88emrR6YwIDMHi3Ex0ikg/s400/ChristmasHats03.JPG" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 266px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 400px;" /></a><br />
I'm sure people are tired of reading about my darn hats, but I made a few variations (for donating to the hospital). If you don't want to go with a traditional type Christmas hat (Santa), you can change things up with stripes of various thicknesses and elf-inspired variations on the puff-ball tipped hat (like the green and white one on the right, which I LOVED, and am now making a larger sized one for my youngest niece).<br />
<br />
These are basically the same pattern as the <a href="http://dualperspicacity.blogspot.com/2011/11/knitted-santa-hat.html">Santa Hat</a>, except you start with 50 sts (these were all newborn sizes).Tammyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10276557642391880637noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7950264434413505620.post-60462309918342046412011-12-08T09:37:00.001-05:002011-12-08T09:48:06.784-05:00Kanzashi FunEver since I discovered the existence of <a href="http://pinterest.com/stacycrapo/kanzashi-flowers/">Kanzashi flowers</a> a couple months ago, it's been on the top of my To Do list to learn to make them.<br />
<br />
And this week, I attempted my first ones! I have to say that it was so fun!<br />
<br />
I wanted to make one like <a href="http://www.kaboodle.com/reviews/etsy-transaction--royal-emerald--kanzashi-style-silk-flower-brooch">this</a> - leave it to me to try the hard ones first.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I wanted a classy pin to jazz up my black dress for my husband's company Christmas party. I haven't decided what I'm going to use for the center yet. I used this old button as a stand in for the pictures.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
It's that time of year again for me...to make Christmas ornaments.<br />
<br />
This year I decided to do something I've never done before and that was to make ornaments out of felt.<br />
<br />
I had a church activity I was asked to lead again (making Christmas ornaments) so I came up with the tree at the top and this lovely star and bird.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyjrh6oyxuV9aBLQEW3nNavvV83ILqVh7ZcpZCWCdfOIeAh5UCzxUg0BTFDjLFs_fAJ-JxXaX_pDaqbkhF9jVMwTZueS1jfCk5aROsmwXjf8oX38G9YT6RhyflpcBSZ9aSQvpncdKSi2yh/s1600/_DSC0432E.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyjrh6oyxuV9aBLQEW3nNavvV83ILqVh7ZcpZCWCdfOIeAh5UCzxUg0BTFDjLFs_fAJ-JxXaX_pDaqbkhF9jVMwTZueS1jfCk5aROsmwXjf8oX38G9YT6RhyflpcBSZ9aSQvpncdKSi2yh/s640/_DSC0432E.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbRcaJa3O9iyCbN2ov_QrCLhhsgz-Wizmq6w22RR92QOUNgM1Hgtum_bnYQ7KWl69pLDW30fUonyrC2D8trmu3z6tTmR4monptuQ4bTCL52p4Myg3PD3f_pWc-GqZaPlVCg9_F01Yo28qc/s1600/_DSC0406E.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbRcaJa3O9iyCbN2ov_QrCLhhsgz-Wizmq6w22RR92QOUNgM1Hgtum_bnYQ7KWl69pLDW30fUonyrC2D8trmu3z6tTmR4monptuQ4bTCL52p4Myg3PD3f_pWc-GqZaPlVCg9_F01Yo28qc/s640/_DSC0406E.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
But after I finished <i>those </i>I didn't want to make them for my family.<br />
<br />
One day I got an ad/catalog from <a href="http://www.shutterfly.com/">Shutterfly</a> (which is where I get photobooks - which look great, by the way, if you're interesting in doing that sort of thing) and there was a cute little felt owl ornament on one of the pages....which I then proceeded to copy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Unfortunately, this post will ruin the surprise for some people (sorry Tammy - but you can choose which one you want!).<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><u>Toddler Tie</u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><u><br /></u></b></div>
I attempted to find a tie I could buy, but finding one for a toddler was impossible.<br />
<br />
For the tie, I used <a href="http://www.purlbee.com/little-boys-tie/">this tutorial</a> over at the <a href="http://www.purlbee.com/">Purl Bee</a>.
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-yLfxMiGfgHs/TsZd53NGUcI/AAAAAAAArDo/GWOUQcH1cc4/s640/_DSC0168E.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-yLfxMiGfgHs/TsZd53NGUcI/AAAAAAAArDo/GWOUQcH1cc4/s640/_DSC0168E.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I couldn't find a fabric with stripes that had the right color combination, so using leftover maroon fabric from Evie's robes I just top-stitched stripes onto the fabric after I'd cut out the pattern shapes.<br />
<br />
<b><u>Robes</u></b><br />
<b><u><br /></u></b><br />
This is the part of the costume that I thought would be exceptionally difficult. You can't just go out and <i>find </i>a pattern for Harry Potter style wizards robes! That would be too ridiculously convenient!<br />
<br />
My initial research led me to <a href="http://www.dartheagle.com/hp_tutorial.html">this website</a> which shows you how to adapt a standard robe pattern into a Harry Potter style robe....for adults, anyway. I used the same method for a child sized robe.<br />
<br />
The pattern I use was <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Simplicity-Pattern-2571-Costumes-2-1-2-3-4/dp/B003ZPGAA6">Simplicity pattern #2571</a>. I scoured <a href="http://www.joann.com/">Joann's</a> and the internets for fabric in the right color. I found some at <a href="http://www.moodfabrics.com/">Mood Fabrics</a> - it's cotton poplin and I just <i>love </i>the maroon color. It just so happened that I had recently purchased a Groupon that gave me $30 worth of fabric for $15. Go me!<br />
<br />
It took me a couple of days to adapt the pattern, which I thought was going to take me forever (!) - hence why I started in, like, August. But it went surprisingly fast and easy.<br />
<br />
After the pattern was finished, I made a basic <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toile">toile</a> out of white fabric and it looked great! (I love when that happens!) However, that one won't be worn outside anytime soon - white robe with a pointy hood.....yeah, didn't think that one through. I'll have to add trim or lace or something to it in the future....can't let a good robe go to waste.<br />
<br />
Here's my oldest modeling the toile.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EtI3N0bBY4Y/TlVVoDzz-xI/AAAAAAAAp70/2aFcsaQZddw/s1600/DSC00480.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EtI3N0bBY4Y/TlVVoDzz-xI/AAAAAAAAp70/2aFcsaQZddw/s320/DSC00480.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Some improvements I made to the pattern - I added a lining to the whole thing, a side pocket and a wand pocket on the inside. For the neck closure I used a frog closure that I found at<span class="Apple-style-span" style="text-align: -webkit-auto;"> </span><a href="http://www.joann.com/">Joann's</a>.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I found a picture of what the patch was supposed to look like, then scaled it down in <a href="http://www.inkscape.org/">Inkscape</a> to the size I wanted. I printed it out and basically just eyeballed the design as I was sewing (I used a separate piece of leftover fabric and a small embroidery hoop). The pattern was just too small and the fabric too black (go figure!) to draw it out before I did it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I am very proud of how well these robes turned out.<br />
<br />
Can anyone argue against this little girl being the cutest Gryffindor ever? No? I didn't think so.<br />

You know, just because. He refuses to wear it, of course, preferring to rub it on his face instead. *Le sigh*<br /><br />This hat is probably 6-12 months size. It's pretty simple. I used a fluffy/wispy (yes, very technical!) white yarn for the trim and ball; Vanna's Choice "cranberry" for the red. <br /><br />Cast on 70 sts with the white on size 7 dpns. Purl around until the work measures approximately 1 1/2 to 2 inches (when the hat is finished, this trim will naturally roll under a little bit). <br /><br />Switch to the red. Stockinette stitch around until the red part of the work measures about 3 1/2 inches.<br /><br />For the decreases, start by knitting 8, then knit 2 together. Repeat all the way around (7 times total). Then knit 2 full rows.<br />Next decrease, *k7, k2tog*, repeat around. Knit 2 full rows.<br />Continue decreases in this manner, remembering to knit 2 rows between decreases, until you have 7 stiches left. *k2tog* until you have 1 stitch left. Tie off and weave in all ends.<br /><br />For the ball, use straight needles (or two dpns) and cast on 10 sts of the white. Stockinette stitch until you've made a square. Cast off and leave a tail. The purl (or wrong side of the work) will face out when you're done (this side looked fluffier with this yarn). Use the tail of the yarn (and a tapestry needle) to draw together the (4) points of your square. Then run the tail through the (4) mid-points of your square and tie off tightly (you should have a round-ish ball). Use the remaining tail to attach your ball to the tip of your hat.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkHLVWetKFqC5awT1zapzJhpt53hyzgz8x3jB4C9J8PjDX4C1A8q3QhOBXwXTOSbyIPlcSAL48EQHtC8BygKlSKzUUUSNuSkVWeH5hZpyJpxxNqV_doVU7G2tIn5PNMpEqCt-KFS7QEqA/s640/IMG_2927santahat.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 640px; height: 427px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkHLVWetKFqC5awT1zapzJhpt53hyzgz8x3jB4C9J8PjDX4C1A8q3QhOBXwXTOSbyIPlcSAL48EQHtC8BygKlSKzUUUSNuSkVWeH5hZpyJpxxNqV_doVU7G2tIn5PNMpEqCt-KFS7QEqA/s640/IMG_2927santahat.JPG" border="0" alt="" /></a>Tammyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10276557642391880637noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7950264434413505620.post-88343635196915273832011-11-08T10:48:00.000-05:002011-11-08T10:48:03.701-05:00Mermaid Halloween Costume - Part 4, Tail<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-nrowtVCdAB0/TqM2srSrWOI/AAAAAAAAqiM/1wn_dBazJl0/s640/_DSC0588E.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-nrowtVCdAB0/TqM2srSrWOI/AAAAAAAAqiM/1wn_dBazJl0/s640/_DSC0588E.JPG" width="425" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For Madeline's Mermaid Tail I used <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-2083-costumes.aspx">Simplicity pattern 4043</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Incidentally, a word about buying patterns - never (ever!) buy them at full price! Every few months Joann's has McCall's and Simplicity patterns for as little as 99 cents. Keep an eye on their ads!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Moving on.....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVwzTCUFQDsXHPuOOJqLIvI-SyibhKOb7myN6DKgNbyVHH6Cfc7cSL1g-U6ufOWTL007RoTeG3fJmcBQCEjsEJcGDu5vnhJC02NILlDt-SSklU57q5MJlRkXuzmFbk77cb69c-Yb0_qKZ8/s640/_DSC0563E.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVwzTCUFQDsXHPuOOJqLIvI-SyibhKOb7myN6DKgNbyVHH6Cfc7cSL1g-U6ufOWTL007RoTeG3fJmcBQCEjsEJcGDu5vnhJC02NILlDt-SSklU57q5MJlRkXuzmFbk77cb69c-Yb0_qKZ8/s640/_DSC0563E.JPG" width="425" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Not much to say about this part. I followed the instructions pretty close, except for the sequin aspect. They had suggested buying sequin trim (pre-sewn sequins that you just have to baste in place), but they are very expensive. I thought I could do a good job by hand so even though I had never done it before, I gave it my best shot.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-fAjiW285pGo/TrlJ-pLyamI/AAAAAAAAqt8/w2nOGlH8e7A/s640/_DSC0791E.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-fAjiW285pGo/TrlJ-pLyamI/AAAAAAAAqt8/w2nOGlH8e7A/s640/_DSC0791E.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Again, the method is really easy - sequin, bead, and then back through sequin hole again. I used seed beads and these plastic pearl beads I got from my Mom the last time I visited her house. (I pilfer craft supplies, what can I say?)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I sewed them on both sides of the tail. I alternated between the sides on every sequin/bead to make it easier on myself. In other words, I'd do one sequin/bead and then I'd flip it over and do a sequin/bead in the same spot on the other side.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-crymVnebPN4/TrlKF0QCTvI/AAAAAAAAquA/bGaHTFm24zg/s640/_DSC0792E.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-crymVnebPN4/TrlKF0QCTvI/AAAAAAAAquA/bGaHTFm24zg/s640/_DSC0792E.JPG" width="425" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think it turned out well. It weighs a ton - not <i>literally</i>, but for a four year old, it was a tough proposition to carry it around while trick-or-treating.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I whipped this skirt up in a couple of hours. It's made of the same cotton poplin that I used for her robes.<br />
<br />
It's basically two rectangles and a waistband. I also put in a lining. There are four 1/2 inch pleats in the front.<br />
<br />
The front:<br />

<br />
The back - there are three tiny pleats back there:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw4dbZvZRcSl7GaYTpdTGxDJTCxsAPX2W8Iz_NI7870INctkt0E6NmTqzgP4MSjnC7onlFYkP2nk6wuWKZf3rxg9Ts6mkovyxb3pnqcXT52qo-ryxLQvmeMHV1B3p2t_CJMnn-fusUArmN/s640/_DSC0891E.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw4dbZvZRcSl7GaYTpdTGxDJTCxsAPX2W8Iz_NI7870INctkt0E6NmTqzgP4MSjnC7onlFYkP2nk6wuWKZf3rxg9Ts6mkovyxb3pnqcXT52qo-ryxLQvmeMHV1B3p2t_CJMnn-fusUArmN/s640/_DSC0891E.JPG" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
In retrospect, I should have made it bigger, but I was afraid I'd make it <i>too </i>big. Ah, my irrational fears.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc7MXzzvZe2xvABRm5I5-zjn7I9SJbKW-mGxaprdvwmqcRDfR8MJT0dBAJ4fC2W5SpUW0nhvoHU8T8mdjP2QEj44rT_oMqEIEbdu5H_roFK061ssu3O6NggOkdqAmEoBluLfUbiH0Nt6sL/s640/_DSC0882E.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc7MXzzvZe2xvABRm5I5-zjn7I9SJbKW-mGxaprdvwmqcRDfR8MJT0dBAJ4fC2W5SpUW0nhvoHU8T8mdjP2QEj44rT_oMqEIEbdu5H_roFK061ssu3O6NggOkdqAmEoBluLfUbiH0Nt6sL/s640/_DSC0882E.JPG" width="425" /></a></div>
<br />
I think it turned out great, though it wasn't part of the costume that would be seen by anyone. It was cute nonetheless.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned for more! Up next is Evie's Gryffindor tie!<br />
